FADE IN: EXT. OUTSIDE BRADLEY'S BOOKS - EARLY MORNING A few people wander to and fro, the leftovers of the morning rush hour. DANIEL BRADLEY opens the door and carries a large metal 'OPEN' sign out onto the pavement, which he places in front of the shop. As he returns to the shop, he also slides a cardboard sign reading 'Situation Vacant' onto the window adjacent to the entrance. CUT TO: INT. INSIDE BRADLEY'S BOOKS - EARLY MORNING Daniel is sitting behind a desk in the middle of the bookshop, methodically opening books, stamping them and placing them in some kind of order. Daniel has worked in the shop for the past 10 years since quitting the stock market. He was partially forced into the career change due to stress, but partially because his late father had always wanted him to take over the family business. The door opens. JASON WATKINS walks in. JASON Hello DANIEL Hello, can I help you? JASON Uhm yes. I was wondering about the Job you had available ? DANIEL Ah yes .. well it's not much I'm afraid. 5 pounds an hour and 3 afternoons a week with one weekend in four. I have to pick up my kids from school you see, now that my wife has retired. JASON Actually, that will work out just fine -- I work with the local church a few days a week myself and I really wanted something to keep me occupied. DANIEL Really ? Hey, that's great. When can you start ? JASON Thursday ? DANIEL Great. See you then Jason leaves the shop. CUT TO: INT. BRADLEY'S BOOKS - MIDDAY THURSDAY Daniel is packing some books into a bag, and pulling his coat on. He heads towards the door. DANIEL OK, i probably won't be back tonight, but I'm stopping by Edith Rosewood's house on the way home -- she said she might have a few items for me. JASON No problem. I'm sure I can handle the rush DANIEL (smiling) OK, now are you sure there's nothing else you need to know ? JASON Honestly, I'm fine -- um, actually there is one thing. DANIEL What ? JASON Who's that man? Jason points to a man sitting at a table on the upper level of the bookshop. He is sitting at a table surrounded by piles of books. DANIEL You mean Chris ? JASON Yeah, it's just that I noticed him in exactly the same place when I came in on Monday DANIEL Well to be honest, I've kind of got used to him now. He arrived about 6 months ago looking for a particular book. He told me he couldn't tell me anything about it, as he'd written it himself and he was worried about his idea being stolen. JASON Surely he can just look up the title ? DANIEL That's what I said. But he said that he never gave it a title. He said that he just needs to read the first page and he'll know if it's his book or not. Put it this way; it helps me out because he files the books away once he's cleared a table full. JASON So is he any trouble ? DANIEL Oh lord no. He's a good man. Always has time for a chat. Anyway, I have to go. I'll see you later tonight. JASON OK, bye. Daniel leaves the shop. Jason looks up at Chris and watches him for a few minutes as he pulls one book of a pile, reads the first page then puts it back onto another pile. FADE OUT: FADE IN: INT. BRADLEY'S BOOKS - LATER THAT AFTERNOON A radio plays in the background as Jason carries piles of books around the shop, stopping every now and again to slot them back into their correct sections. He slowly and deliberately works his way upstairs towards Chris. JASON Hey CHRIS Hi JASON Any luck ? CHRIS (sighing) No. Still looking JASON Daniel told me a little about you CHRIS (smiling) He did ? None of it's true Jason laughs JASON No. He said you were looking for something ? CHRIS Ah yes. My book. JASON You know, I've worked in more than a few bookshops in my time. Perhaps I could help ?? CHRIS Thanks man, I appreciate it, but I really have to do this myself -- no matter how long it takes. The clock on the wall strikes 3pm. CHRIS (CONT'D) Dammit, I'm late. Chris grabs his things and rushes from the shop CUT TO: INT. BRADLEY'S BOOKS - THURSDAY EVENING Daniel walks through the door. JASON Hey. Edith didn't let you down then ? DANIEL No -- bless her. After stuffing me with tea and cakes for half an hour, she just wanted to show me each and every item she had. JASON The family album ? DANIEL And the heirlooms They both laugh DANIEL (CONT'D) Anyway, it looks like I've got a box full of stuff that I thought Chris might be interested in. There's a pretty diverse selection in here for an old bat JASON (smiling) Did you know he ran out at 3 o'clock this afternoon ? DANIEL Oh yeah. He normally goes at ten to three, but sometimes he leaves it a little late. He's so punctual, I actually set the clock upstairs by him ! JASON Do you know where he goes ? DANIEL No. Don't ask. And he appreciates that. JASON (pondering) Fair enough. Hey, I'll carry the box in OK ? Jason steps outside and brings the box in, placing it on the counter. CUT TO: INT. BRADLEY'S BOOKS - FRIDAY AFTERNOON Jason is sitting at the cash register by the door apparently doing a crossword. He glances at the clock on the wall -- 2:50pm. Chris walks past with a smile. CHRIS See you later Jason JASON Sure. He waves a hand as he returns to his crossword. As the door to the shop closes, Jason jumps from his stool and runs to the spy out of the glass door. He watches as Chris waits for the traffic to ease and walks briskly across the road. JASON (CONT'D) (to himself) What the hell! Jason grabs the keys from behind the register, switches the 'out to lunch' sign behind the door around and closes the shop. He waits a few moments for Chris to disappear down an adjacent road and crosses the road after him. CUT TO: EXT. STREET ADJACENT TO BOOKSHOP. Chris is walking briskly down the street, checking his watch regularly as he goes. Jason is walking about 20 metres behind him, not really making any effort to conceal himself as Chris doesn't seem to be too concerned to look behind him. He ducks into an alley and Jason follows. CUT TO: EXT. BACK ALLEY Jason watches as Chris unlocks a large metal door and steps inside. The door starts to slowly close and Jason makes a desperate dash to catch it, which he does. He goes inside after Chris. CUT TO: INT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE Jason slowly walks through the warehouse, staring up at the long empty shelves, and staring down at the rats running to and fro. He spies a light on the upper level and heads for an adjacent staircase. CUT TO: INT. OUTSIDE OLD MANAGEMENT OFFICE Jason can hear Chris' voice clearly now as he creeps up to the window and peeks through. He is stunned to see something that isn't Chris but is quite clearly talking like Chris. He strains to hear what is being said. UNKNOWN VOICE I'm getting a little tired of this. CHRIS I know. I just want to get off this rock and get home. UNKNOWN VOICE It's clear that there has been some effect on them. Maybe it's time to send a clean up crew ? CHRIS No ! No -- that's not necessary. I'll find it. Then we can do it properly. UNKNOWN VOICE You know it may help if you tell them what you are looking for CHRIS Oh yeah, sure. I'm sure they'd take that REALLY well. UNKNOWN VOICE There's no need for that tone Cadet. CHRIS I'm sorry Jason stumbles and knocks over a box UNKNOWN VOICE What was that ? CHRIS I'll find out. End transmission. Chris runs out, looking like Chris again, to see Jason sitting in the corridor outside the office. CHRIS (CONT'D) Jason ?. What the hell are you doing following me ? JASON I'm sorry. I was -- curious. CHRIS (sighing) I guess it was bound to happen one day. Behind his back, Chris reaches into his jeans for a device that resembles a weapon. JASON Look. I -- I don't know what you are or where you are from but -- I want to help. I really do. I won't tell anyone what I've seen today. I swear. Chris pauses. He stares off into space for a few seconds. CHRIS You know -- maybe it would be a good idea if I had help. Behind his back, Chris returns the weapon-like device. JASON Really ?. I swear on my life I won't tell ANYONE what I've seen. I swear. CHRIS (smiling) OK, I believe you. Come on, we've got some work to do. JASON Just one thing though. CHRIS What ? JASON How the hell did you get from the front door to here ?. I was right behind you CHRIS Close your eyes Jason obliges CHRIS (CONT'D) (O.S.) (CONT'D) Like this ! Jason looks around and Chris is nowhere to be seen. He runs to end of the corridor and looks down the stairs to the front door. Chris is waiting for him, smiling. CHRIS (CONT'D) Come on ! JASON (smiling) Damn ! FADE OUT. FADE IN: INT. BRADLEY'S BOOKS - LATER ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON Chris and Jason return and Jason closes the shop and pulls the blinds down. CHRIS OK. Now it's difficult to actually tell you what I'm looking for without actually telling you what I'm looking for - if that makes sense. JASON Well -- no They laugh CHRIS I think the closest I can give you is that it's -- an instruction manual. JASON OK. That's a good place to start. CHRIS Well yes and no. You see I've read all of the instruction manuals in here JASON OK. Well Daniel should have a new box of stuff here somewhere. Jason walks over to the pile of boxes in the corner of the shop. He grabs his rucksack that is sitting on top of the pile and he slings it across a nearby table. It spills open and all the contents fly across the table. JASON (CONT'D) Dammit ! Chris notices a book has fallen from Jason's rucksack. CHRIS What's this ? He picks up the book and reads the first page. He slowly looks up at Jason. CHRIS (CONT'D) This is it. This is my book. I've found it. Chris places the book on the table and sits down. CUT TO: CLOSE UP OF BOOK COVER A tattered, leather bound book. The cover reads quite clearly "THE BIBLE". FADE TO BLACK.
